The Spartans Win the Bell Capital Cup!

2014-01-02

It was an exciting week of hockey as the Spartans won every one of their games in the Bell Capital cup, including a nail-biter of a championship game against a team from Beijing China.

In first round play, the Spartans were victorious over the Cumberland Dukes, the SouthEnd Ice Warriors, and the Nepean Cyclones.  With a GF-GA record of 14-5, the Spartans had earned their place in the 2nd round.

In the skills competition, the Spartans won the Breakaway event (offence) scoring with 5 of the allotted 6 pucks provided.

In the quarter finals, the Spartans won over the Nepean Dominators 3-0 with a much deserved shutout for goalie Connor Salisbury.

In the semis, the Spartans faced their house league rival, the Almonte-Pakenham Thunder.  In a hard-fought game, they came out on top with a final score of 4-1.

In the championship game they faced the Beijing Snow Leopards.  The strong-skating Snow Leopards took an early lead in the first period and held the lead throughout the period.

In the second period, the Snow Leopards gained another goal.  This was soon-after countered by the Spartans first game goal, scored by Noah Brigden.  The Snow Leopards scored yet again, closing out the 2nd period with a 3-1 lead over the Spartans.

In an exciting third period, a mid-period goal by Owen Riedel brought the Spartans to within 1 goal of the Snow Leopards.  With 2.3 seconds left in the game, Josh Lapointe scored and kept the game alive.  He repeated his success in the double overtime period, earning the Spartans the division championship.  A well-earned victor after a great game of hockey!
