IP Evaluation Weekend
Hello all,
I would like to thank you all for making the 4 sessions of IP conditioning a truly enjoyable experience for the kids. There were lots of smiles that’s for sure and as always lots of tears which is to be expected for 4, 5 and 6 year olds just starting out in hockey. It can be a huge deal getting on the ice for the first time with all the kids at different skill levels. All of your children should be commended on doing such a great job and listening to all of the on ice helpers so well.
Now comes the fun part. We need to separate the kids into 10 teams. We have about 180 children registered – all with various skating abilities. We need to place the children on teams according to their abilities. This results in the best possible scenario for their hockey development. We will do it this coming weekend. The purpose of this message is to share what you can expect this weekend:
1)You will arrive at the rink and there will be a sign in table so please make sure you stop and sign in. At this point I will hand you a jersey to be worn during this ice time and then you need to hand this jersey back to the sign in table at the end of this ice time. Please do not leave the rink with the jersey as they need to be used multiple times throughout the day. You will get your official jersey the following weekend once you are placed on your team for the year. I will be at the sign in table for both days so please feel free to introduce yourself if you have any questions or concerns.
2)On the ice the kids will go through a set of three drill stations. They will be evaluated at each station by two different evaluators. It does not matter if they cannot do a station but just that they attempt it. No one expects a 4 year old first time on skates to be able to do a cross over. They will work on all of these skills throughout the year. This is just a way to separate the kids. Saturday’s stations will be orward skating, ransitions, andtopping and Sunday’s stations will be cross-overs, backwards skating and tight turns. The same six drills we did during evaluationsso no surprises for the kids!
3)While yes there will be helpers on the ice the idea is to get the kids to try the drills by themselves to the best of their ability. Then we can evaluate them correctly making sure that they are placed appropriately. There will still be a spot left on the ice for any player who does not want to participate in the evaluations however I highly encourage everyone to participate. As I always tell the kids when they fall. “Falling means you are trying hard” Falling is a good thing at this level since they are learning and they are pushing themselves to be the best.
A couple of rules for this coming weekend:
1)Please come at your assigned time. You will not be allowed on the ice at a different time. I have had many requests to change times this weekend including from my wife. If I told her NO you can figure out what the answer will be to anyone else that asks to change their assigned times this weekend. We try to be well organized and make the ice time and evaluation the best possible for the players and yourselves. If we have people showing at a different time then they were assigned it just causes confusion and ruins it for everyone
2)Please make sure neck guards are on. I saw a few players without neck guards so please make sure that they are on
3)No parents on the benches. If we need you the n-ce helpers will call you over. Feel free to bring the water bottles over to the bench but then please leave the bench area. The evaluators will be on the benches and they need the room
4)Please do not leave the rink for any reason. Once the evaluators have evaluated every player on the ice the players will be sent off the ice. So it may not be a full 50 minutes of ice time.
I am still looking for about 5 Head Coaches to step up and run a team at all of the skill levels. So please if you can assist and commit to being a Head Coach please send me an email.
I am also still looking for on ice and off ice help this weekend. I am looking for people who can commit for all 4 hours on Saturday and another 4 hours on Sunday. Please email me if you can help.
Sorry for the long winded email but I figure better to be informed then not. Below are the times for this weekend evaluations. Notice Sunday we are at the Sensplex in Kanata and NOT the GRC. The times have not changed from when I sent them out before.
Thanks and see you at the rink
